The National Weather Service will now only issue cold weather advisories and extreme cold watches and warnings in an effort to clear up public confusion.

The National Weather Service has made significant changes to its cold weather alert system, aiming to simplify watches and warnings and to prepare the public for dangerous conditions.

The National Weather Service is removing wind chill watches and warnings and replacing them with three new winter alerts: the cold weather advisory and the extreme cold watch and warning. This change is because at very low temperatures,
